Common Questions
Here are honest answers to what people most commonly ask before starting therapy. If yours isn’t here, reach out — I’m happy to answer.
That’s completely okay — many of my clients are starting therapy for the first time. There’s no script you need to follow and no way to do it wrong. We start wherever you are. The free 15-minute consultation is designed exactly for this moment: low stakes, no paperwork, just a conversation.
Therapy at Becoming Her Counseling is a collaborative conversation. I won’t give you homework you didn’t agree to or push you to talk about things you’re not ready for. We work at your pace, building a relationship where you can say what you actually think and feel. Most sessions are 50 minutes and happen weekly or biweekly, depending on what works for you.
If something is affecting your daily life, relationships, sleep, or sense of self — it’s worth exploring. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people start when life feels manageable but they want to feel better, understand themselves more deeply, or finally work through something they’ve been carrying for a long time. If you’re wondering whether therapy would help you, that’s usually a sign it would.
That’s completely normal. Many people sit with that uncertainty for a long time before reaching out. The free 15-minute consultation exists exactly for this — it’s a no-pressure conversation to see how therapy might feel. You can ask anything and there’s zero obligation to continue.
I work with teens and adults in individual therapy. I do not currently provide couples or family therapy.
Trauma-focused therapy directly addresses the impact of past traumatic experiences on your thoughts, emotions, body, and relationships. Rather than pushing you to relive painful memories, we create safety first — then gently and collaboratively process what happened at a pace you control. Healing is possible. It doesn’t happen by avoiding the past, but it also doesn’t require you to be flooded by it.
Parts Work (IFS-informed) is a therapeutic approach that understands the mind as made up of multiple “parts” — like the inner critic, the protector, the achiever, or the wounded child. Each part developed for a reason and is trying to help you in its own way. Instead of fighting these parts, we get curious about them, understand their role, and help them find new, healthier ways to support you. Many clients find this approach deeply healing because it doesn’t pathologize any part of who they are.
It depends on what you’re working through and what your goals are. Some clients see meaningful change in 8–12 sessions. Others prefer longer-term support over months or years. We talk about this regularly and you are always in control of the pace and direction of our work. I’ll never push you to continue if you feel complete — and I’ll never rush you through work that needs more time.
Yes. Confidentiality is fundamental to therapy. What you share stays between us. There are narrow legal exceptions: if there is imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or in cases of suspected child abuse, I may be required by law to take action. I’ll explain all of this clearly in your first session and answer any questions you have. You won’t be surprised.
Yes. I offer secure, HIPAA-compliant video sessions for anyone in Oklahoma. Virtual sessions are just as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns and offer more flexibility around your schedule. You can meet with me from your home, your car, or anywhere you have privacy and a stable connection.
